Felted Item Care Guide

Storage

·  Avoid leaving felted works in the dark or in direct sunlight for extended periods:  Light could cause colour fading and darkness may encourage moths.

Dusting

Wool naturally repels dirt but will accumulate dust over time.

To remove dust:

·  Blow the dust off using compressed air (available in cans for cleaning electronics).

·  Alternatively, use a vacuum cleaner set to blow air out, if your model supports it.

Washing Guidelines

If washing is necessary:

·  Hand wash in room temperature water.

·  Use a small amount of gentle, pH-neutral soap.

·  Minimize agitation to preserve the shape and texture.

·  Rinse in clean cold water

Special Considerations for washing 3D items

Washing 3D felted forms should be avoided if possible.

3D items may be stiffened with shellac or PVA and should not be crumpled.

   Instead:

·  Submerge the item in the soapy solution.

·  Gently rub only the dirty areas.

·  Rinse by submerging in clean, cold water.

Drying

·  Place felted items in the washing machine on the spin cycle to remove excess water.

For 3D items:  Before spinning, stuff with towels or dishcloths to help maintain the shape.

·  After spinning:  Reshape both flat and 3D items while still damp.

·   If further reshaping is necessary once dry, use a clothes steamer to soften the felt and reshape while warm.
