Breaking Free — Wet‑Felted Wool Sculpture
Merino wool, partially stiffened with PVA
Dimensions: 34 × 30 × 20 cm
Breaking Free is a sculptural meditation on the suppression of women and the unstoppable force of independent thought. Wet-felted in merino wool, the piece combines softness and strength, vulnerability and defiance.
At the centre of the work a smooth, faceless grey head sits encased in a lattice-like mask that evokes chains, cages, and systems of control. The neutral grey palette speaks of erasure—of identity, individuality, and the right to be seen.
But the sculpture refuses to remain contained.
From the crown and back of the head, vivid pink tubular forms break through the structure, bursting past the confines of the mask. These organic eruptions represent thoughts that cannot be trapped, silenced, or subdued. They push outward with energy and insistence, suggesting imagination, intellect, and inner life breaking through imposed boundaries.
The contrast between the muted greys and the vibrant pinks heightens the emotional impact: a quiet body, a loud mind; a constrained exterior, an unstoppable interior world.
- Merino wool provides both delicacy and resilience, allowing the sculpture to hold complex curves and voids.
- Wet‑felting techniques create seamless transitions between forms, giving the impression that the mask and head have grown together.
- PVA stiffening is used selectively to support the open lattice structure without compromising the organic softness of the wool.
The result is a tactile, dimensional artwork that invites close inspection
Breaking Free speaks to anyone who has felt constrained by expectation, tradition, or imposed identity. It honours the quiet rebellion of thought, the persistence of creativity, and the inner strength that endures even when outward expression is restricted.
Whether displayed as a standalone centrepiece or as part of a collection exploring identity, feminism, or contemporary fibre art, the sculpture offers a compelling visual narrative that continues to unfold the longer one spends with it.
