Ocean Tri-Whirl - Wet-felted organic sculpture in merino wool and silk

Merino wool, silk, PVA.  33cm across each face and 32cm high.

A sculpture playing with geometry, organic form and a splash of serendipity.

The design began with some beautiful gifted silk scraps that brought to mind a triangular form.  This lead on to a softened, twisted echo of a tetrahedron - with its edges rounded, its planes gently twisted, its surfaces opened with light‑catching holes and the silk fragments nuno‑felted into it. The shape was transformed through differential shrinkage using prefelts, directional fulling and a lot of coaxing.  Finally it was partially stiffened with PVA, to help the white areas hold their shape.

What emerged feels part‑mathematical, part‑organic — something that seems grown rather than constructed, like a shell or seed pod or sea creature.
