The Witch’s Cape

Wet‑felted gravity‑defying wool sculpture

Merino wool, hand‑dyed Bluefaced Leicester, hand‑dyed silk, hand‑painted man‑made fabric, glass beads, steel wire

Dimensions: 31 cm W × 19 cm D × 34 cm H

Held upright by a single integrated wire, The Witch’s Cape appears to defy gravity—its sweeping folds and curling tail poised mid‑motion. Inspired by Goethe’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the piece imagines a mischievous moment: the witch’s cat, having tugged the cape from its peg, tries to restore it with a spell learned from its mistress. The charm half‑succeeds—the cape rises, but upside‑down, and fuses with the wand and the cat itself. The wand glints at the upper edge, while the cat's tail curls gracefully below, completing this whimsical transformation in felt and fibre.
